Climate Change
We cannot make an argument for or against human-induced Climate Change. We don’t need to. We just need to look around in our own town, state and country, and then check a few facts and make a few observations of our own. That’s what we did, and we encourage you to do the same. You will find some key facts shared through out the web site. Click here for a list of Environmental News Events that we think are significant.
‘Once the human being declares independence from reality and behaves with absolute dominion, the very foundations of our life begin to crumble, for “instead of carrying out his role as a cooperator with God in the work of creation, man sets himself up in place of God and thus ends up provoking a rebellion on the part of nature”. [95] [Pope Francis, Laudato Si’ encyclical, par. 117, emphasis added]
We believe that Climate Change is real, and that the cause is partly natural and partly due to humans. Here are some examples:
- Hurricanes and Severe Storms – Katrina, Ivan, Sandy, Harvey, Irma, Maria.
- Torrential downpours and flooding seem to be very common these days.
- Drought seems to be everywhere that flooding is not.
- Glaciers are disappearing at an alarming rate and large areas of the Arctic Circle are opening up to navigation.
- Wildfires: California (always), Georgia (2016), Florida (2016), Tennessee (2016), British Columbia (2017)
- Coral reefs, such as Australia’s Great Barrier Reef, are dying.
- Rising sea levels and sinking shores are increasing coastal flooding, at home and around the world: Florida, Louisiana, New York, Jakarta, Venice, Shanghai, etc.
“Still, we can see signs that things are now reaching a breaking point, due to the rapid pace of change and degradation; these are evident in large-scale natural disasters as well as social and even financial crises, for the world’s problems cannot be analyzed or explained in isolation.” [Pope Francis Laudato Si’ encyclical, par. 61, emphasis added]
