The Role of the Catholic Church and People of All Faiths

We believe that the need has never been greater for the churches of the world to take a leading role in caring for the environment. We believe that we should follow the Pope’s call to all people to “take swift and unified global action” to protect our shared home, planet Earth. This is a tall order, but it is urgent and important. For more information on Pope Francis’ environmental encyclical, “Laudato Si, On Our Care for Our Common Home,” see…

“The writers of the Laudato Si Atlanta Action Plan are men and women of science and faith who believe in the ‘power of the pulpit’ to transmit the Pope’s call to action in churches temples, mosques and synagogues.” [Saporta Report, June 11, 2017]

We believe in working hand-in-hand with our brothers and sisters of all faiths — Buddhist, Christian, Hindu, Jewish, Muslim, Unitarian and others – to protect the people and the planet, as stewards of God’s creation. While the Roman Catholic Church under the leadership of the Pope is now “stepping up,” many religious groups hold “care of creation” as a principal tenet of their faith. For example:

We believe that now is the time for action. We believe that all people of faith can build awareness, take action, educate, and share at the church, neighborhood, city, county, state and national levels. We believe that the Laudato Si’ Atlanta Action Plan is a great example of how to turn words into action.
